Internally assessed units
Internally assessed assignments are set and marked by teachers, tutors or training providers. We then verify the marks are correct, through a sampling process called standards verification.

Externally assessed units
Next Generation BTEC programmes contain an element of external assessment, which is set and marked by Pearson.
The grade that can be achieved for each unit depends on the BTEC qualification being completed. The table below shows the possible unit grades from highest to lowest:

If the work the learner has produced doesn’t meet the grading criteria for the lowest passing grade available for the qualification (P, L1 or N), they will be awarded a U, which means ’unclassified’.

How to calculate point scores and your overall BTEC grade
Once the learner has completed their BTEC, all of their unit grades are converted into a points score, which are added together to calculate the overall grade. For information on calculating the overall BTEC grade please click here.
