Our Review of Marking and Moderation (RoMM) services allow you to request that we run additional checks to ensure that the grades we've issued your candidates are correct.

Please click on a service below to see further information:

Service 1 - Clerical Check

What is it?

A check of all clerical procedures which leads to us issuing a result. This includes making sure:

  • All parts of the exam paper have been marked
  • Marks have been recorded/added up correctly
  • Special consideration has been applied (where appropriate)
  • The grade boundaries have been applied accurately

You might consider this service if the results for one candidate are unexpected compared to the rest of the cohort.

Candidates’ marks or grades can go up, down or stay the same.

The deadline for completion is within 10 calendar days of receiving the request and is available when the component is from one of the following qualifications:

Edexcel Level 1 and Level 2 components/units

  • Edexcel GCSE
  • Edexcel Certificate/International GCSE
  • Edexcel Awards in Mathematics
  • Edexcel Functional Skills

Edexcel Level 3 components/units

  • Edexcel AEA
  • Edexcel AS and A level
  • Edexcel Awards in Mathematics
  • Mathematics in Context (Level 3 Core Maths)

BTEC components/units

  • BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Firsts
  • BTEC Level 2 Tech Awards
  • BTEC Level 2 Technicals
  • BTEC Level 3 Nationals

To get a copy of the clerically checked exam paper, you should request an Access to Script (ATS) service at the same time as submitting Service 1. There is a fee for this additional service.

A check that our examiners have marked externally assessed components correctly. This includes:

  • A clerical check (Service 1)
  • A review of the marking of units/components by a senior examiner

You can ask us to review the marking of exam papers for individual candidates, and the results for each candidate will be reported separately. This service isn't available for internally assessed/externally moderated coursework components.

Candidates’ marks or grades can go up, down or stay the same.

The deadline for completion is within 20 calendar days of receiving the request and is available when the component is from one of the following qualifications:

Edexcel Level 1 and Level 2 components/units:

  • Edexcel GCSE
  • Edexcel Certificate/International GCSE
  • Edexcel Awards in Mathematics
  • Edexcel Functional Skills

Edexcel Level 3 components/units:

BTEC components/units:

  • BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Firsts
  • BTEC Level 2 Tech Awards
  • BTEC Level 2 Technicals
  • BTEC Level 3 Nationals

To get a copy of the reviewed exam paper, you should request an Access to Script (ATS) service at the same time as submitting the Service P2 request. There is a fee for this additional service.

Service 3 - Review of moderation for internally assessed/externally moderated controlled assessment and coursework components

What is it?

Where we've adjusted centre marks during moderation, this service checks that our moderator has made an accurate judgement on the centre’s ability to mark the work to the national standard. This includes:

  • A review of the original moderation by a senior moderator
  • Feedback with a similar level of detail to the original moderator report

This service can't be requested if we agree on centre marks during moderation.

A review of moderation (Service 3) replicates the original moderation process; therefore, the same sample will need to be available for review. Any mark changes may impact all candidates completing this component at the centre in the current exam session.

Candidates’ uniform mark scores (UMS) can go up, down or stay the same, but grades will not be lowered for the current exam session.

This means that if a candidate’s mark is lowered, their grade won’t change as a result of a review of moderation (Service 3) in this exam session. However, their new mark will be used to calculate any future overall grades that require this component, e.g. an A level grade using an AS coursework mark.

The deadline for completion is within 35 calendar days of the moderator receiving the original sample of work and is available when the component is from one of the following qualifications:

  • Edexcel GCSE
  • Edexcel Certificate/International GCSE
  • Edexcel AS and A level
  • Edexcel Foundation, Higher and Extended projects
  • BTEC Tech Awards 2022

If a centre is concerned about the marking of a centre cohort

Our approach to managing all post-results services is to ensure that every candidate has a result that accurately reflects their performance and to maintain confidence in our qualifications and outcomes.

However, if, as a centre, you have concerns regarding the marking for a component or subject cohort, you should submit requests for reviews of marking for all candidates you believe to be affected. This will enable us to take a holistic view of the quality of marking and allow us to take any corrective action which may be required in a timely fashion.

You must obtain written candidate consent for reviews of marking after the publication of results, as with these services, candidates marks and subject grades may be lowered. Candidates must be informed of this possible outcome and provide their written consent before an application is submitted.

For further information, please refer to the Joint Council for Qualifications guidance.

Access To Scripts (ATS)

Our free Access to Scripts online portal allows you to view your candidates marked scripts online or download them as a PDF, which has been marked online, free of charge from our self-service portal. The portal can only be accessed by Edexcel Online (EOL) users who have the 'Exam Viewer' profile ticked on Edexcel Online. Access is usually controlled by the centre Exams Officer (please see Edexcel Online (EOL) Accounts for further information about EOL user profiles)

For more details on using the online portal, please see Post-Results Services (PRS): Access To Scripts / Script Viewer Service.

Please note: The exam viewer process applies to those general and vocational qualification exam materials that can be scanned and uploaded. There are a few different reasons why materials may not be scanned, such as:

  • Damaged papers
  • Modified papers
  • Quarantined materials

If the desired material is not available on exam viewer, centres may be able to obtain a copy of the required paper by submitting a post-results request for ATSC (Access to Scripts Copy) on Edexcel Online.
This service is also free of charge.

To find out how to request copies of these scripts, please see Post-Results Services (PRS): Access To Scripts / How To Apply For Traditionally Marked Scripts.

The Access to Scripts service provides a rich source of information, enabling detailed analysis to inform teaching and learning and support students - giving insights and visibility that performance data alone cannot provide.

Providing visibility and transparency of marking

  • Viewing actual exam scripts provides greater visibility and a deeper understanding of individual students’ exam performance.
  • Seeing where your students picked up or lost marks will help you to make an informed decision about requesting an EAR.
Helping to inform post-results decisions for students and boost their confidence
  • Viewing actual exam scripts can boost students’ confidence and engagement by showing what they did well and reaffirming their knowledge and skills.
  • Supports teachers in advising students about their next step post-results.
  • It provides a deeper understanding of students’ strengths and weaknesses that cannot be gained by performance data alone.

Helps identify skills gaps so you can tailor future teaching plans and refine approaches

  • Reviewing both performance data and exam scripts provides an extra depth of insight, allowing you to see where your students have performed well or not so well at individual, class and cohort levels. This information can be used positively to refine teaching practices throughout the department and pitch future teaching to particular strengths and weaknesses.
  • This knowledge can inform teaching strategies for the next cohort and shape the curriculum at each key stage by highlighting areas/topics that need to be taught in more depth earlier on.
Supports departmental CPD
  • Enables the individual teacher to become more confident in their marking skills.
  • Use real student exam scripts for departmental CPD to refine and strengthen marking skills and help teachers to recognise what a given grade looks like, which may help with forecasting of grades.
  • Student scripts can be used to understand patterns and anomalies in the results of your team, and CPD can be devised, which may help to improve your departments results
