Rules for use of dictionaries at Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 examinations can be found below:
 

Paper-based tests

Candidates are allowed to use dictionaries and bilingual dictionaries in all functional skills examinations except English writing tests.

On-screen tests

Candidates are allowed to use dictionaries and bilingual dictionaries in all functional skills examinations except English writing tests.

Entry Level Functional Skills

The use of dictionaries is forbidden in Writing and Speaking, Listening and Communicating assessments of Entry Level Functional Skills in English. Candidates are permitted to use dictionaries in Reading assessments. 

Bilingual translation dictionaries may be used by all learners in Reading, Maths and ICT tests. In Writing tests, bilingual translation dictionaries may be used only by learners whose first language is not English, Irish or Welsh. The use of a bilingual translation dictionary should reflect the learner’s normal way of working within the centre.
