Your allocated Standards Verifier (SV) will contact your centre Quality Nominee via email to introduce themselves. This communication should be forwarded to the Lead Internal Verifier, who will then work with the Standards Verifier to plan for sampling to take place.

Please note: Standards Verifiers will be allocated from January 2024, and you must have registered your learners in order to receive an allocation. Should you require a visit prior to receiving an allocation, then please contact us, providing a rationale as to why an earlier visit is necessary.

For the 2023/24 academic year, most Standards Verification activity will be completed remotely. Centres may be eligible for a face-to-face visit if they fulfil any of the exception criteria. If your Standards verifier believes that your centre is eligible for a face-to-face visit, they will discuss this with you and then submit a request to us. We will then make a final decision. The deadline for sampling is 31 July 2024

The Standards Verifier will review a pre-determined sample of learner work and supporting quality assurance documentation. For detailed information, including 'External Verification Checklist' and 'Quality Assurance Year Planner', please see pages 13 to 31 of the below document:

Quality Assurance Roles

Centres are responsible for identifying staff members to hold the roles of Assessor, Internal Verifier and Lead Internal Verifier as defined below:

Assessor
Assessors are responsible for teaching and assessing learners against the learning aims and assessment criteria of the course specification.
Internal Verifier
Internal Verifiers (IV) are responsible for ensuring that assessment decisions are consistent across the programme by checking that assignments are fit for purpose, standardising assessors and sampling assessment decisions. Anyone involved in the delivery and assessment of the programme can be an Internal Verifier, but they cannot internally verify their own assessments.
Lead Internal Verifier
The Lead Internal Verifier (Lead IV) acts as a single point of accountability for quality assurance across a Principal Subject Area. This means that they’re responsible for managing the assessment of units and qualifications as well as signing off assessment and internal verification decisions.

There is no specific Assessor or Internal Verifier (IV) qualification requirement for Skills for Life qualifications, including Functional Skills. However, the Internal Verifier must have a good understanding of the qualification and its assessment.

Where a Centre has a small number of teaching staff, the Lead Internal Verifier can act as an Internal Verifier; however, they cannot verify their own assessments.

For detailed information on the roles and responsibilities of the quality assurance team within your centre, please see Centre Guide to Quality Assurance and the video below.
