Understanding BTEC Tech Awards 2022 Results

When you receive results for each internally assessed component, you will see a 'Grade' and a 'Uniform Marking Scale (UMS) mark total'. The UMS to Grade mapping is fixed and you can find it in the specification. Please see BTEC: Locating Specifications and Administrative Support Guides for support locating a specification.

Please note: For Construction, the internally assessed components are components 2 and 3. For Art and Design, there is only one internally assessed component, and it has a larger maximum UMS number, as shown below:

Have my Raw marks been adjusted?

Following moderation, if any of your marks within a component are outside of a reasonable margin of error, an adjustment will be applied. This will affect the marks across the cohort. From results day, you will be able to review the final Moderator Report, which will state if an adjustment has been applied and provide guidance on how to improve marking for future series. If you want to compare the submitted Raw marks with the final Raw marks, you will need to compare these yourself as the results do not hold any information on initially submitted Raw marks but only final Raw marks.

The final raw marks can be found in the 'Component Results' report, which can be downloaded from Edexcel Online (EOL). If you cannot download this report ask your Exams Officer to provide it to you.

1. On Edexcel Online, select 'Results' and then click 'Reports - Bulk Download':

2. Select the 'Session' and select 'Component Results [*.csv]', then click 'Submit':

The report will be delivered to your Edexcel Online mailbox (linked at the top of the page) within 2 hours.

This report will have the 'RawScore' column, which represents the adjusted raw mark that was used for awarding. You can compare this to your submitted 'Raw' marks to understand how much adjustment has been applied.

If no adjustments have been applied, then the Raw marks in the results reports should tally with your submitted Raw marks.

Why are UMS marks needed?

The UMS is used to convert learners' component 'raw' marks into uniform marks in order to standardise marks from one series to another. This is because raw mark grade boundaries may change from series to series to take into account variations in the difficulty of assessments. We set new grade boundaries each time a new exam or assessment is completed. They indicate the minimum number of raw marks learners need to achieve to get a particular grade.

E.g. a learner who just achieves a Level 2 Pass in a component one series will receive the same uniform mark as a learner achieving that same component grade the following series, regardless of their raw marks, as the UMS grade boundaries stay the same from series to series.

How do I see the Raw to UMS mapping?

The webtool can be used to see how a PSA Raw mark is mapped to the UMS marks that are used for certification. Each Session (PSA) has a table that shows how a Raw mark would be translated to the UMS mark found in the results.

This is very useful when using past PSAs as mocks because you will be able to mark the mock in Raw marks and translate this to a UMS mark to give feedback to your students on their performance.

Only within the webtool will you see each Raw mark and its UMS mapping for a PSA.

Using the BTEC Nationals and Tech Award raw-marks-to-points converter

Please follow the steps below to use the raw-marks-to-points converter webtool:

1. Select 'Tech Award 2022 suite':

2. Select the required 'Series':

3. Select the required 'Subject' (in this example we have selected D.I.T):

4. Select the unit/component (in this example we have selected BIT01):

5. You will be presented with the conversion tool. Enter the individual raw mark received into the box, and the UMS and Grade columns will update automatically:

6. Use the 'Grade Boundaries' tab to see the Raw to UMS mapping at grade boundaries. Raw marks (removed from the image below) are only available from Results Day:

7. The 'All scores' tab will provide a full table of Raw mark mapping to grade and UMS. This information is available on Results Day:

8. The 'Export' option is available on each of the tabs, 'Your Mark', 'Grade Boundaries' and 'All Scores'. Selecting this will enable you to print or download the data to a file for your use in centre:
