Identification of Lead IVs
|
Do centres need to complete Lead Internal Verifier registration?
There is no requirement to register a Lead IV on Edexcel Online from 2024-2025. Instead, centres are required to identify a single Lead IV for all the below BTEC programmes being delivered.
- BTEC Level 1/2 Firsts
- BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Awards (2017, Engineering only in Wales and Northern Ireland)
- BTEC Level 2 and 3 Technicals
- BTEC Level 3 Nationals
- BTEC QCF Specialists, Level 1, and Entry Level
If you are delivering across a range of programmes from different suites for the same subject area, then you can choose to use the same person as Lead IV for all those programmes or you can split the responsibility if your staffing allows for that. If there is a single Assessor for a programme then that person should be the Lead IV, but they will need another person to act as their Internal Verifier. Where staffing allows, there should always be someone who can step in if the Lead IV is taken ill, or away from work for any length of time. These succession arrangements should be noted by the Quality Nominee and maintained along with a list of all Lead IVs within the centre.

Lead Internal Verifier registration for QCF programmes – Do I need OSCA accreditation?
Lead IVs should remember that OSCA accreditation for QCF qualifications ceased to exist on 31 August 2019. By identifying a Lead IV for a QCF programme, you are confirming standardisation will take place within your centre. Please maintain a record of the completed activity. |

Can I identify more than one Lead Internal Verifier for the same qualification/Can I change the Lead Internal Verifier?
You can only identify one Lead IV per qualification each academic year. Where a new member of the BTEC team takes over the role mid-year, the new Lead IV should complete the centre standardisation materials, if not already completed. |

I am a lone Assessor, who should be identified as the Lead Internal Verifier?
If you are the only Assessor on a programme, you should identify as the Lead IV but ensure that another person internally verifies your assignment briefs and a sample of your assessment decisions. The Internal Verifier can be someone from another area/centre with occupational competence. |

As the Quality Nominee, how can I check my Lead Internal Verifiers have been identified?
Please see our Template for managing your Lead Internal Verifiers – This can be found here under internal assessment and verification templates. During team meetings please use this template to ascertain who is identified. |

Completing Centre Standardisation Materials (CSMs)
|
What does standardising the assessment team involve?
The Lead IV is required to use Centre Standardisation Materials (CSMs) to train/standardise their team of Assessors and Internal Verifiers each year. This ensures that everyone involved in the assessment of learner work understands national standards and this should be undertaken prior to any assessment of learner work for the current academic year. Centres should retain evidence that this process has taken place and make the evidence available on request. |

When should programme teams conduct the standardisation activity?
Centres are advised to conduct this activity prior to formal assessment commencing, according to the dates identified in the Assessment Plan for the programme.

We do not deliver the units included in the Lead Internal Verifier standardisation materials. Do we have to complete the activities?
The material chosen is representative of the programme at the correct level. It may not always include the actual units that you deliver - particularly if an optional unit is used. The ‘standard’ should be discussed and applied holistically across your subject area. |

As the Quality Nominee, can I access the standardisation materials for my Lead Internal Verifiers?
Yes, any staff member with an Edexcel Online account can use their login credentials to download the materials from the qualification webpage. |

As the Quality Nominee, how do I know my Lead Internal Verifiers have completed standardisation?
For confirmation of Lead IVs and programme teams completing standardisation, we advise that you request a copy of the minutes/ notes from the Standardisation meeting and that you maintain your own record of when this was completed. |

Managing vocational quality
For additional help and support for Quality Nominees and BTEC delivery teams, we have created dedicated quality assurance webpages that can be accessed via the Home of Quality Assurance. These webpages provide easy access to quality assurance guides, videos and resources, FAQs, regular updates, training events, live chat with an expert and much more.
We recommend Quality Nominees and BTEC staff join our Quality Nominees Group, here you can ask questions directly to the Vocational Quality Assurance Management team, browse posts/updates and share ideas and good practice with colleagues. | |
